EPR registration numbers: what marketplaces ask for and how to get them

12 Oct 2026 · Enforcement

When a marketplace asks for your "EPR registration number," it means a specific national register ID — one per country. There is no single EU-wide number. Here is what they actually ask for and how you get them.

TL;DR — Each EU country runs its own packaging register and issues its own registration number. Marketplaces verify these numbers country by country under Article 45(4). You need one per country where you sell.

One number per country — there is no single EPR ID

Unlike VAT's IOSS or product-safety's EU-wide systems, packaging EPR is national. Germany has LUCID, Belgium has Fost Plus, France has ADEME/SYDEREP, and every other member state has its own register. A German number does not register you in France, and a Belgian number does not register you in Spain.

What a marketplace will actually ask you for

For each country where you list, the marketplace will ask for that country's registration number — matched to your legal entity. Amazon, eBay, Etsy and others verify the number against the national register before they let you list, and they can suspend a listing the moment a number does not check out.

How you get the numbers

The path is the same in every country: appoint an authorised representative if you are not established there, register in the national packaging register, and join the local producer responsibility organisation. The authorised representative handles the registration and hands you the number — and stays the locally accountable party behind it.

FBA does not get you out of it

A common misconception: "Amazon ships my goods, so Amazon registers." It does not work that way. Fulfillment by Amazon makes Amazon your fulfillment provider, not your producer. You placed the packaged product on the market, so the registration number is yours — Amazon will simply ask you for it before your inventory can go live in a country.

The practical takeaway: map your target countries, get a registration number for each one, and have them ready before a marketplace asks — because the request comes with a deadline, not a warning.
